The Lamp

I had a small piece of land as my sole possesion.
I tilled it using my cow and worked hard on it to grow a crop.
Waited from rains but a drought came.
Didn't give up and tried again.
Next time got a good result.
Used some of it to feed myself and sold off the rest.
With the profits I bought healthier diet for the cow.
Fed it to great health and milked it.
I had surplus milk so I distributed it to those who had no cows.
That was my biggest mistake.
No one wanted free milk so I realized my mistake and kept all the milk to myself and didn't publicize.
Now I used to save the cream of all the milk in a jar.
One day, when I had enough cream, I sat down to churn it.
The churning went on for hours and hours.
I lost sense of time.
After a lot of churning I finally got butter.
I separated it into a utensil carefully.
Now I took a spoonful of butter in a lamp and dipped some cotton in it and using it as a wick I lit my lamp.

This one is a short film which borders on the thin and controversial line of spirituality and explores its meaning and challenges the common perception surrounding Sannyaas (सन्यास)

Sannyaas, according to me, is not being a renunciate. The wandering ascetic is not a sannyaasi.
How I perceive Sannyaas is as a combination of two Sanskrit words San and Nyaasa.

सन्यास = सन + न्यास

सन means to gain.

न्यास means resting, being stationary, to precipitate.

Therefore, this film will break across the centuries old version that Sannyaas is abandonment of the 'world' and try to put forth the idea of Sannyaas as gaining constancy and ceasing the incessant wavering and running around.

The film will feature a man driving a car in the hills. He is driving at a more than necessary speed, apparently the victim in a car chase. Through couple of flashbacks we come to see that he is being sought by the police. As he passes by vehicles on the road, he relates with the people in those cars with incidents of his own past life which are shown as intermittent flashbacks.

Since it is going to be a visual story-telling, I won't write much except the essence of the film that self-realized are not those who sit still but those who come to a standstill.

Since, it's going to be a film on a shoestring budget (am not a rich guy), I would use this track as the music. Just this track. No dialogues whatsoever.

[An attempt to pen down the love ballad of the 70's unemployed youth in India dreaming of love and riches. Would be perfectly picturised on Amol Palekar in an Utpal Dutt movie - maybe I could go back in time and suggest it for Golmaal :-D ]
